“Did I ever tell you that you are absolutely beautiful?” asked the older girl, looking into the other’s eyes as she kept smiling.

“Only a few thousand times,” answered Yoona, mocking an irritated sigh, which was quickly followed by a giggle.

“Thousands? Then I have to make sure it becomes millions before our first anniversary!”

Yoona giggled even more, embarrassed. It was not that she disliked compliments, but it never felt right to hear them. Not towards herself.

“Unnie, you’re far too blind.”

“If that is so, then I’d rather be blind for the rest of my life.”

Yoona widened her eyes a little, somewhat surprised at Taeyeon’s poetic words, but facepalmed at the cheesiness, letting out a chuckle. She bit her lower lip lightly, closing her eyes for a few seconds before gazing over at the other.

“Did I say something wrong?”

“No no… it’s just… the way you said it,” mumbled Yoona, letting out a sigh before continuing, “you’re too sweet to me unnie.” She grinned, wrapping an arm around Taeyeon’s waist and bring her closer.

“It’s all because I love you,” limpidly stated Taeyeon, placing an arm around the other’s thin figure, pushing them even closer towards each other.

“I love you too Taeng. Very, very much,” Yoona spoke firmly. Although they were together for some time now, she had always felt some guilt for leaving her beloved one in pain before. She loved her, and felt like she always needed to reassure Taeyeon that she truly did.

Taeyeon smiled, faintly blushing. Her heart raced whenever Yoona blessed her with that sentence. She had heard it many times before, but it always felt like the first. She buried her face on the younger one’s thin neck, delicately pressing her lips against her bony collarbone. Yoona wrapped her other arm around the girl’s small body, pulling her in for a proper hug, one hand still on Taeyeon’s waist as the other slowly massaged her scalp, tangling her fingers on the older girl’s soft hair. She pressed her chest as much as she could against Taeyeon’s, her breasts lightly brushing against the other’s.

The crescent moon began to hide behind clouds once again, its ray of light slowly diminishing as the two girls continued to hold each other close.

An alarm broke the peace prevailing in her room. She reached over to her bedside table, turning off the dreaded cell phone ringtone and returned to burying her head in the pillow. It’d be another day of skipping class.

December 12th, 2007. A week had already passed since the incident, but Taeyeon still could not bear to show her face in public yet. Not with Yoona around.

An hour or so later she lifted her head, sighing as she gently rubbed her eyes. Much to her misfortune, she could not sleep her way out of high school. She lazily got up, putting on her bunny slippers. Scratching her behind as she straightened her back, she made her way to the kitchen. Silence dominated the household, as her parents had left earlier that week for an extended vacation. After fixing up some breakfast for herself, she stared at the pile of books on the living room table. Final exams are in two days. Taeyeon had tried to study, but focus and especially motivation were currently lacking in her spirit; more than usual. Snorting, unpleased, she sat on one of the chairs and picked up her physics book. Might as well try to study.

It was not long before she had fallen asleep on her notebook, drooling over her equations, pencil still at hand. Back in her room, her cell phone began to ring, causing Taeyeon to jump up, startled with the sound echoing through the house. She ran over to it, but the ringing had stopped before she grasped the phone. Sighing, annoyed, she checked her missed calls. It was Jungsoo. She furrowed her eyebrows, a bit puzzled as to why he would have called her at such a time, but didn’t have much time to ponder on the mystery as her phone vibrated with the arrival of a message:

I haven’t seen you all day again… still ‘sick’? We’ve been missing you in class. Class ended early and the last reviews were today, will you be okay studying on your own? Call me if you need anything.
– Jungsoo.

She smiled a bit at the message before closing her phone and placing it back on the bedside table. He had been sending her messages everyday since Thursday, and appeared to be the only one worried over her absence. In a way she felt grateful for his concern, but the fact that her existence was not entirely ignored bothered her at the same time. If he noticed… did she notice too? She shook her head aggressively, not wanting to think back on her… that girl… the girl she loved. She shook her head again, hitting her own forehead.

“Studying… I should be studying.

”Taeyeon skipped back to the living room, staring at her books. I can’t do this. Smacking her notebook against her head, she was desperate to focus. She wasn’t desperate for a high grade as she was doing well in all her classes, but she had to study. Unfortunately, the knowledge would not pass from her notebook to her brain through banging it against her skull.

He closed his phone with a sigh, putting it back into his pocket before continuing to walk down the hall. He tried to move quickly yet unnoticed, for class had ended early yet he was condemned to stay for volleyball practice if caught by one of his teammates. The gate the gate the gate… he repeated in his mind as he got closer and closer to it, almost tasting the freedom. Just a little more….

“Heeey Jungsoo, found ya just in time!

”As he heard that voice and felt those hands on his shoulder all the words in his mind just collapsed into nothingness, his excitement dropping instantly as he turned around with a wry smile.

“Ah, yes coach?”

“Practice time! You almost forgot, didn’t you?” laughed the man, patting Jungsoo on the shoulders before heading to the gymnasium, expecting the young man to follow him. With a sigh he did what was expected of him, walking right behind his coach. So close…

He entered the dressing room, greeting his teammates with pats on the backs and high fives. Changing quickly and heading out, it was practice time. The others laughed at him for a moment before the coach began to speak, expecting Jungsoo’s excitement to build up soon enough.

Though the practice itself wasn’t what excited Jungsoo usually. Oh no… it was the girls.

As the sound of a whistle echoed through the school, the herd of young women made their way into the gym to watch a bunch of men hit a ball over a net. The simplicity of it all made him giggle a little at how so little was needed to be done to get so much attention. More amusing yet was the cheers and boos as the coach divided the boys between shirts and shirtless for practice matches. The boys were fully aware of it too, and from time to time teased the audience with winks and smirks. Well, except Jungsoo, whose ego caused him to tease and show-off in every slightest chance he had. Handsome and fit, his looks and alluring actions allowed him to climb to the position of one of the most popular guys in school.

“Shirt…less!” said the coach, as he pointed at Jungsoo.

Screams were heard. He smirked, turning towards the bleachers and removing his shirt slowly, winking before throwing the shirt aside as practice began. The screams grew louder. He laughed, grinning to himself. The cheers, the screams, they were almost his source of energy and power. He tried to be modest about the attention he got, but he couldn’t deny that it pleased him.

However, there were two girls in particular that never seemed to make a big deal of his special presence. Or well, that’s what Jungsoo liked to be known for: being special. He never quite understood why those two appeared to be invulnerable to his charms.

Today, however, neither were present.

“You alright man?”

“Worried over exams?”

Jungsoo’s restlessness was notable by the end of practice. He rubbed the comments off with chuckles, claiming to just be nervous over his studies. Quickly showering and changing, he headed towards the school gate, sighing in relief. Well that was pointless, he thought, regretting not being able to escape practice earlier. Avoiding the group of girls that would usually try to chat with him, he grabbed his bike and made his way home.

Or well, almost home.

He stopped his bike as he passed by another familiar house.

I probably should check up on her…

Leaving his bike against the fence, he made his way to the door, ringing the doorbell.

No one answered.

He furrowed his eyebrows. She’s probably sleeping. He rang it again, twice in a row, to be sure.

After another few second of silence, quick steps could be heard from inside. He started chuckling a little to himself, recognizing that pattern. Yeah, she was sleeping.

“… Oppa?” said a voice through the other side, the door slowly opening.

“No, a burglar! Of course it’s me silly.” He chuckled, waving at her.

She laughed along with him, moving aside so he could come in. Removing his shoes, he looked around and quickly noticed the mess of books on the living room table, laughing loudly.

“Yah!” she hit his arm. Not with her usual strength though. “What’s so funny?” she exclaimed, closing the door behind him.

“Oh Taengoo… you really suck at studying don’t you.”

“I’m trying all right? Did you come over just to tell me that?”

“Oh no no, I came by to make sure you’re okay.” He smiled softly.

She smiled back sheepishly. He furrowed his eyebrows slightly.

“Oh… I’m fine.”

No you’re not.

“Then why haven’t you been in school?”

“I’m just… sick, that’s all. You don’t have to worry.” She avoided exchanging eye contact as she spoke. He stared at her a little, but knew he wouldn’t push the truth out of her.

“Ah I see… well, I still worry over you.” He placed a hand on her shoulder. “So come on, we’ll study together.” He pulled her back to the living room table, forcing her down and sitting on the chair beside hers. She looked at him somewhat confused, sighing.

“I told you I’m fine.”

“I know you are. But I have to study too, so let’s just do that together.” He smiled again, rubbing her shoulder a little.
Taeyeon’s faint blush didn’t escape Jungsoo’s eye. He let out a chuckle, settling down his backpack and taking out his notebook.

Something is definitely wrong.

* * *

Why is he here? He shouldn’t have come.

She disguised her sigh with a yawn, looking away slightly. It’s not that she didn’t like Jungsoo’s presence –she did–, but she would rather be alone. She noticed his chuckle, rolling her eyes. No, don’t get the wrong idea, she thought.

Though the wrong idea was the truth. Or, well, somewhat. Taeyeon herself wasn’t sure.

“Fine, let’s start with physics then.” She grabbed the book; opening it to the chapter she had marked earlier with a paper. It’d be quite an awkward study session.

His presence felt weird, and she didn’t know which was worse: the fact she knew why or that she knew he could tell that she felt strange. She knew that didn’t bother him at all though, being the attention-whore he was. But Taeyeon knew that her attention was significant.

She didn’t like giving him any hints. They’ve known each other since they were kids, and as neighbors they grew up together. Not feeling anything for someone so close was quite difficult. However, this feeling was like the seasons; it came and went, for no exact reason. Taeyeon just presumed it came when she felt lonelier. At least that was the case in this situation.

“Taeyeon?” he snapped his finger in front of her face. “Focus! What’s wrong with you today, aish…”

“Hm? Nothing nothing,” she paused looking away for a moment, then continuing, “Though you know what? We’ve been studying a lot, we should take a break.” Before even getting a reply she got up, rushing over to the kitchen and opening the fridge. Somehow it always helped her think.

God, Taeyeon stop acting like this. I mean Yoona rejected you but… she paused her train of thought before she got into that subject again. She was afraid.

“Ok stop it now.”

Jungsoo closed the fridge door from behind her, startling Taeyeon as she moved against the fridge looking back at him. She wryly smiled and opened her mouth to speak, only to have a finger brought against her lips to stop her.

“No, no more excuses. Something is wrong. I don’t know what it is with you the past week but… the secrecy, the awkwardness, you not going to school… Are you trying to tell me something? Cause if you are…” he smirked a little, “… I may know what it is.”

No you idiot it’s not what you think! She screamed in her head. Not exactly at least. She had been acting strange, but it was all in preparation of the misfortune in the closet the past week. Jungsoo was unfortunately always around, as they often walked back from class together.

During her absence she may have thought about him. She may have thought about how things would be if she had fallen for him instead of her. How it would have been if she had not gone after her. She may have thought of how it would be if she allowed him to come closer. She may have thought about whether that would or would not help her heal her wounded heart.

“Are you too afraid to speak because I’m right?”

And she sure didn’t know the answers to her speculations yet.

He tilted his torso lower so his face could be closer to hers. Against the cold surface of the fridge, she couldn’t run away now. Especially not from her own house. She grabbed the finger he had against her face, moving it aside slowly. He opened his hand and simply held onto hers.

“J-Jungsoo I-“

He held onto her hand tighter. Unfortunately, she knew he wouldn’t miss such an opportunity.

“No. Let’s allow actions to speak for themselves for once.” He interrupted her as he came closer for a kiss.

I shouldn't have opened the door.
